10 ways to add spice to your relationship

10 ways to add spice (sans hot chilli ) to your relationship

  1. Start with the little things: a goodbye ~ have  a great day hug and a kiss ! and / or welcome home one !
  2. Hand picked flower or small choc on their pillow (or whatever ticks their boxes !)
  3. Slip a small card or a note or print a funny / cheeky joke to leave in their lunchbox (if you make it) or sneak something into the car...or under the windscreen wipers or tied to antenna...be creative or a random text message if they don't do home made lunches.
  4. Leave a small treat/gift in their lunchbox or a homemade voucher for something - back massage , promise to wash the car together, neck rub...(or #2 whatever ticks their boxes !)
  5. Set aside time for each other, every day, even 5 -10  mins 'face time'
  6. Check out free at home or  $30 date night activities (even stay at home ones can be fun) - schedule them regularly so you both know (ok not so you dread it like the dentist) - plan for a babysitter every so often. (hundreds of ideas here that will get you on the naughty list)
  7. Be alert to each other's moods and feelings ...make a conscious effort to honour and comfort them when they are experiencing tough days or times. (Even if it kills you to be extra sweet !)
  8. Switch off i things and technology & TV one night a week for an early night or #5 & #6 ! *
  9. Ask and remember the bigger things:  their hopes, their dreams, their goals - (write them down) - and support endeavours to change habits or make lifestyle changes (lose weight, stop smoking).
  10. Keep your relationship hawt, young and fresh by doing things differently and surprising them when they least expect it. At least once a week !!!
Ps * If all else fails hide the remote !

It takes a little hard work sometimes, but you know ... I wouldn't have it any other way.

R U OK - three simple words could change a life

I hope by now you all know what R U Ok day is about .

15th September is R U OK? Day.

I, like many of my fellow bloggers writing their own R U OK posts, have struggled with what to say , how to say it and how much I can comfortably disclose. I have two things to write about one from 21 yrs ago and one more recent.

So 'My story' is not my story as such.

Twenty one years ago my vibrant , boisterous and funny cousin G , committed suicide at 24yrs. G was only a year or so older than me. It stunned and shattered me. It was out of the blue or so it seemed. G had spent some time living with our family and we knew him well (or so NOT !) . No one knew he suffered depression, likely Bi polar.

He had a new job, a partner who was expecting his first child (I think) and was due to receive compensation payout for a back injury. A painful one. Then he was gone. G had his life on track, everything to live for after a period of being unsettled and having tough luck.

My father received a phone call one morning to ask him to identify G's body. I know not how or why my Dad was the one. It was devastating. It profoundly affected my Dad for a long time.  I honesty don't know the exact details (who talks about this) ... G hung himself in bushland not far from where he lived , where my Dad worked too.

I remember my husband telling me, he answered the phone call. After rivers of tears , I searched through all my wedding photos and my wedding video to watch G, to see why we had missed whatever. I saw nothing but his smiling face. For a long time I grieved G. I couldn't begin to understand the fact that he hadn't asked for help. There was probably more to it. I long, even now, to find where I packed my photos and see his face again.

I wished someone had asked G was he OK , 21yrs ago there was still a lot of stigma attached to mental illness and depression. It was very much Chin up mate , have a another beer . Harden up.

Two years before that I was 'nursing' people with mental illness. I have vivid memories, as a student nurse , of spending days (6hrs at a time) in locked wards of a certain mental institution. I was only 19-21 yrs old.

We were 'visiting' - how the heck could anyone cope being there 24/7. I remember never being so scared in all my life, when "crazy" people touched my arm, leg or sat virtually on top of me. Whispering words at me , others silent or rocking on the floor with blank looks, as well as pulling the craziest faces ever seen at me or my student colleagues if we dared make eye contact. It was a ward where most were involuntary admissions.

Yes, we had tutors, and the regular staff were there but I felt unsafe always. I digress...

I also spent time in a private hospital psychiatric unit. It was like a hotel and at 19-20yrs I wondered why all these seemingly 'well'  people were spending weeks, some months, in hospital. However, most were voluntary admissions. Both places were very different and left a lasting impression. I sat in on group counseling and chatted with 'patients' at times. They looked OK, normal , though of course we knew they were struggling with the ups and downs of 'whatever' caused their depression.

I am so thankful attitudes have shifted and organisations exist to help those who suffer depression. The stigma is not such a burden.

The next story is closer to home. There is no doubt that depression causes a lot of strain on relationships and especially marriages. Sometimes you don't even see it coming. I know I didn't.

There is no shame in speaking out about depression and it's affect on relationships. The more we talk the more others understand. Being honest allows others to not feel so alone, if they face the same issues and are feeling ashamed or unsure . The problem lies when people want to keep it a secret and attach blame or interfere in unhelpful ways.

I just can't say too much as it's not my story. Depression has been a part of our my husband's life for a while. He takes regular anti -depressants, I think the depression started after our daughter was stillborn.

He says it is largely a part of it. There is more to it than I suppose he will ever tell me.

I can tell you I felt shattered the first time he told me he had no reason to live , he felt there was no point in his life. I was thankful he told me, thankful he was able to speak to a professional and get help. He knew he clearly wasn't OK and was supported.

We were both OK about that. I still struggled to understand why ? He had three sons and me , no major financial or medical problems (then). He was never suicidal, from what I know, but knowing the thought was there. I was immensely fearful.

We, especially he, made adjustments but had to accept some things he couldn't change immediately.

Even before having a malignant cancer diagnosis, 18 months ago,  that turned our life upside down again. Thankfully, we had already changed our business structure. It turned out that it was an unforeseen blessing. Having a serious cancer diagnosis caused us to reassess a lot more of our life.

him both of us !

Speaking from my own point of view there have been many times when I haven't been able to contact my husband . When it seemed out of the ordinary . I would get very anxious to the point of being so terrified that something had happened, that then I would get angry with him . The Fear ? it drives you me crazy. I know I over react and I have to learn to deal with this anxiety.

Today , when you ask someone "Are you OK"  , it may be painful and very emotional. Here are some suggestions for starting an  RU OK conversation.

Take care of yourself too . Keep talking to your loved ones, friends or colleagues, and keep connecting. Be there but not intrusive and try not to take control.

Remember taking the time every day , not just today, to establish meaningful conversations can help stop little problems turning into big ones. As you listen you may feel ill-equipped to deal with the answer if it's "No ! " "Not really" or they disclose a bigger problem than you can help them with.

It isn't always possible to be everything to everyone , especially if you are struggling yourself or have several friends needing you. It is Ok to encourage others to seek professional help, if they don't already. Gently reassure them , that mental illness is the same as any other . Even suggest you can go with them initially, if they wish.

Here is a page of links if they need immediate help.

Personally, I know I have had periods in my own life when I faced my own anxiety & depression ( Immense grief after loss). I have had numerous friends and support groups who listened when I wasn't entirely OK, for this I am truly thankful. I have not had to take anti depressant medications though I would if I ever need them.

A huge sigh of relief

I think we need to go out tonight and celebrate that everything is ok and my husband's cancer is NOT back. I am so very relieved.

The past 12 days all I have thought about is that our world was about to shatter and turn upside down all over again. Neither of us has slept well.

I know I didn't , directly , blog about it but my husband  had a Brain/head MRI exactly two weeks ago. They wanted to rule out the cause of ongoing headaches and other symptoms especially dizziness and generally feeling unwell.  [He had a very rare, malignant tumour removed in April 2010 from his right temple/muscle very close to his facial nerves/skull. Then he had 6 weeks of radiation therapy in June/July. Hub will have ongoing followup for years]

So 36hrs later they tried calling him. We were at the farm and mobile phone reception is dodgy. They called my mobile and told me they wanted him back for more images asap. I was in town with the kids about to check out a school for next year .Talk about HEART FAILURE ! I then had to go back to farm and tell him. It was terrible to see his face drop !

Last Monday , 6 days after the first MRI he had the second MRI (now his 3rd). They just told him they had found something but needed more images/angles . No Dr was about [6.30pm] and no one said anything about what it might be.

On Tuesday morning Hub called his Radiation oncology nurse, M, [from last year] to ask when he could see Dr. T or anyone ? M said Dr T was away till Thursday afternoon but M said she would call him back. She did [thank God] , to say they needed to compare images from last week to Brain/Head MRI he had in Sept 2010. The images hadn't come down yet , then M said it would probably be Monday (yesterday) before they would.

We heard nothing Monday. I felt  SICK bad for asking him about 100 times if they had called. This morning he went out to work for a few hours and came back for lunch. Again , no news ! I kept encouraging to call them, he said the numbers were in his diary in our work vehicle (not here).

Finally I couldn't wait a minute longer so I ring him.
He says "They think it is just post op scarring - that's all !" I ask him is he sure 10 ten times again. The Radiation oncologist Dr T told him to go off on our holiday and forget about it all. He said Dr T wasn't impressed that the MRI peeps didn't speak to her first (after 1st MRI 2 weeks ago) .

It would have saved us a LOT of heartache ! Though I can truly appreciate they wanted to be sure and not be dismissive of any slight changes.

Onwards ...

Things I know

Trust... lately many things seem to be dealing crushing blows and disappointment all round for my hubby. I do know that the trust my little guys have in their Daddy and their love for him makes up for the people who heap *IT* on him.

I know even though he has always has one or both hanging off one hand or helping him lose with his tools - he wouldn't have it any other way. They race each other to be the first to the door , with arms flung open wide when they hear him come home. They race to fight over the car seat with the view of Daddy. Sweet ... but oh so many tears for the loser.

I know I'd love a bit more sun and sand right now and oh a beach holiday. Just Dreaming !

I know I've had a few reviews lately. I really only do ones that are relevant to me, even unpaid ones.  I wouldn't mind a few comments though...

I know someone must want to win Pinocchio - Blu ray and DVD pack worth $49.95.

I know you will never see me me doing reviews on tampons or toilet paper. Though the bottom line is I love entering such giveaways . Recently I won a year's supply of both in different giveaways. It will help us make ends meet and plug a few leaky holes in our budget.

I know a years supply or 336 rolls looks like this

Grateful for Weddings , RAKs & Babies

A Wedding  ~  it reminds me of how grateful I am for my husband of 21 yrs. We were married in a warehouse with a Christian ceremony, the building stands but it is no longer a church - just a warehouse.

I don't remember our exact vows though I trust we mostly hold true to them and cherish them highly. Our future was before us (like William & Kate's today) a blank slate, waiting to be filled with shared dreams and adventures.A future that was filled with all the hope and promise two young twenty-somethings with the world at their feet could ever imagine...

Incredibly two weeks ago we saw G, a Pastor at the time, who 'talked' us through our wedding vows. G was at DH's niece's enagagement party. Plus our lovely photographer, V who is now his bride.
(Though this Pastor wasn't the Pastor to sign our official marriage certificate...and a year had me all worried we weren't married - he was stirring us up at our friend's wedding)

Every day , I am thankful for my husband's strength and tenacity.  I am grateful today I can pause for a moment to just reflect and recognize all that we do have and enjoy it simply for what it is, without thinking about what it is not.

"What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with incompatibility." - George Levinger

We've been apart the last 3 days and I've missed him terribly ...and his cups of tea :).

Steve -  a 'VIP' truck driver & random stranger ~ who helped back up the car & caravan today after I found myself down a narrow, bendy street blocked by construction ...DEAD END -  Steve's RAK {random acts of kindness} rescued me.
It wasn't supposed to be a one way street , with cars parked either side . I'd still be there otherwise waiting for hubby to come rescue me after he got home from Dubbo 6hrs later.

Babies ~ the International acclaimed movie preview screening of BABIES is on Sunday May 1, 1pm at Event Cinemas Macquarie see this post. If you are in Sydney Sunday and would like to attend I have 5 free family tickets , you can meet me there.
Today is the last day to enter the Lego City SPACE comp - click the Lego Logo 'brick' on the right.

21 years ... Good, bad and beautiful

21 years ago today I walked down the aisle and promised to love honor and cherish my best friend. It is a decision I have never regretted (well 99% of time ) !! I love him beyond measure and I am so proud to be his wife.

I don't want to give any illusion that we have a perfect marriage ...some days far from it. We have had struggles & strife in our relationship.

Still , I'm grateful in a way words cannot define that my husband has stood by with me through good, bad and beautiful , in sunshine and in rain and through all mannner of storms.

I often think of all we have been through together, the brilliant and not so. Life having thrown us what we least expected but we survived by the grace of God. The last year especially.

There is so much assvice on the dress, the flowers, the ceremony, the pictures, the cake and chosing a honeymoon destination . There's not to so much on how to get back on your feet when the metephorical rug has been pulled from underneath you.

Or how your marriage can struggle to survive infertility, stillbirth , unwanted advice from 'outsiders', parenting teenagers and serious illness ... cancer for example. Sometimes you walk through blindly and hope none of the hurdles trip and overwhelm you completely .When paddling up $#!+ creek you just pray you don't fall in and/or drown ...it's hard to keep breathing sometimes too.

I still don't have the answers.

This gem was found at the bottom of the a page under a 'recipe'. I think it is worth sharing! Enjoy

...but he is very fond of Chocolate .

Grateful Saturday - Family

This week I can't say it enough- I am so grateful for
  1. Family ...my husband, my little boys and even my bigger boy who got a job last week. My heart is still breaking, heavy and aching for the mothers of the little boys (& girls) lost in the flood tragedy and Lori losing her soul mate.
  2. That my Hub's family in Gympie stayed were safe.
  3. Going to see 'Tangled' thanks to Nuffnang & Naomi , taking along my little boys, my nephew, niece, their neighbour. Yes , it was just a Disney movie but it was heartwarming to see the family reunited at the end (of course you knew that would happen in a Disney movie). Then the kids had a swim in the pool and we went out for pizza to celebrate my brothers' birthday (which is today - Happy Birthday D).
  4. Community -  the courage shining through the unimaginable devastation and the hundreds of ways people are pitching in to lighten one another's burdens & loss.
Think deeply about what you can do to lighten one anothers' load as you keep safe & laugh in the light today...
If you are financially able please donate to the Queensland flood appeal here

Grateful ~ Friends

I missed posting on Saturday. It just felt wrong to me , on a few levels, after reading the incredible support being rallied for Lori.

Each time I tried I couldn't find the right words to say (write) because the thing I was most grateful for was my beloved husband and family. I felt so guilty for the times I've been less than loving and haven't been so tolerant of things lately beyond his control.

Today I am grateful
  • That I'm able to watch and be awe inspired by the online community ... I know some people don't get it , our online friends we have never met that matter so much . Still thinking of Lori and her family today and #praying for Tony.
  • For a surprise catching up with my friends from over 22yrs ago, essentially because of a FB chat with another friend. A lot has happened in 22yrs but they still showed the same warmth and generosity, gave the biggest hugs, and have same laugh out loud sense of humour.
  • Even better they live in the Central West rural community we are moving too and that makes my heart sing. We will have friends. They have adult children but a dozen grandchildren and another 2 on the way so they love kids.Their home looks like a creche with oodles of toys/books/bikes and trampolines. My small boys loved visiting them. They are such special people who love God and his people to bits.
  • For unconditional love of my special husband, my dearest friend, whose strength in all the challenges we have faced in the last year continues to lift me up every day.
So, what's making you smile today?

The truth and the light at the midnight oasis

The Truth
  • My plans to stress less haven't worked. I feel more stressed then ever before and I have cold sores to prove it.
  • It was a relief for my husband to finish his 6wks of radiotherapy. The oncology team of Drs decided that he wouldn't get any extra benefit from chemotherapy. WE hope radiation did what was intended .That is all.
  • It's now a 6 month wait till the next, first scan.
  • Two more things that will help me to stress less are
The truth is seriously I'd like to use it on my teen (mute function) and to a lesser extent on the other three ;-). It has a multitude of uses ...
  • More of this LOL ...
  • My time is still swallowed up these days just doing regular things. It seems lately I haven't even 5 mins to actually sit down and think of something that others would like to read.
  • No promises but I hope be doing posting more regularly once normalcy reigns in my life again.
The Light
The light at the end of the dark , lonely road tunnel is still visible. I keep holding onto the Light of hope.
It that fails I'll get a brighter light. I know we must also believe in ourselves and our unlimited potential even when things do not go as planned. I wish I had someone to talk too.

...at Midnight Oasis
We are out of town at the farm midnight oasis . It's kind of relaxing.
A retreat ...
Camping with all the comforts of electric cooking facilities, heating, hot water , shower and a flushing loo (...but not in the caravan).
Our shed 'home' is still a work in progress . Nearly everything we are using is scavenged recycled.

At night we put the camels to bed in the caravan which is very comfortable in the meantime.

I'm not sure who still visits so please say hi & raise your hand in the comments. I don't think I have that many readers hanging around.

Why do I bother to blog at all ...I do it for myself as record of the bits and pieces, snippets of times going by , places and people.
I am glad there is no rule ... of how frequently.
I accepted that I''ll never go back to what I had before.
It's a relief to feel less pressure , now I just blog when I feel like it...or have the time ;-)
Just as well I'm not taking up someone else's space by being here.

So tell me how are things going at your place ?
Is life treating you kind?
Can you still see the light at the end of the tunnel?
Are your days flying by so fast you only see a blur ?

hahaha ...my favourite song is playing it's a marvellous night for a moonlight ;-) ...kthxbai

An update ...

So, it wasn't the news we were expecting.

It's not ... though my husband will have to undergo further treatment to beat his cancer. The journey to hope has begun.

Life is still good. My husband isn't sick . Of course we are scared ...
even terrified as we stand on the threshold of this new bridge to cross. It might be a long & winding road but we are not alone.
