Digital dilemmas ~ pulling the plug on cord clutter

Digital age dilemmas First world problems are the cause of much angst in this house .

So if you're anything like my family , you'll have a multitude of electronic devices requiring USB cables and AC chargers - for phones, iPod, kids game consoles and camera battery chargers.

That is not to mention the fact that you too, have also amassed quite a collection of miscellaneous cords that you either aren’t using anymore or saving because you might need later on (or just you are Hoarders like me)

My husband refuses to be held responsible for my lost cords/cables and misplaced chargers. He rolls his eyes  shrugs his shoulders and asks me what I want him do ? when in a panic I rush around looking for a particular item.

Our problem is also complicated because we travel to the farm and home again. Often the cords get packed in unusual places (stop pointing the finger at me !)

Many times a day I am ringing him to ask him where 'X' cord is ?

Frustrating him no end and leaving me cursing , profanities under my breath in no particular order at him and the 'stupid' cord  in a dither.

Kate - also reminded me yesterday in her post on faking it (...not what you think) - where you remove everything off benches and out of sight when you have unexpected guests arriving. In our case house it's house inspections.

My problem is then remembering where I stashed all the cords... (I don't know how I put in the pot drawer or there ! )

Then this brings me to my biggest issue with the storage of electrical cords and chargers - what  do I do with all these odd shaped plugs & wires ?

How do I stop the cord clutter ending up in a tangled mess in half a dozen drawers or cupboards throughout the house, in a box, or dangling off counters for kids to swing off ?

The next hardest part - figuring out which cord goes with what gadget ?

I saw this idea ?
removing the shoes of course ?  $20.95
Just not sure - would it be too fiddly ? Easy to add labels or write on each pocket.

So how do you manage the physical storage ? (I know you can't tell me how not to lose my stuff)

Do you have any other DIY cords & cables storage and organising methods or tips you’d like to share?

What did you say? You need to charge your i Phone  ? well I've got a couple ' i' chargers but can't damn well find them and my hubby lost the car charger 12v adapter thingy.

Yes, I know you can buy expensive gadgets that act like a charging station ... and others with interchangeable tips to suit most devices ..just saying we don;t need any more devices.

What happened next -

Of course things never go to plan.
I could cry and rant about it but I save my tears and tissues for bigger issues.
It's not a disaster , not a catastrophe - just very disappointing.
Very.
Yesterday less than 24 hrs after we left Dubbo we got an urgent phone call.
An email was sent.
Our only major business client has changed the dates requiring our business 'services'.
They want it to happen Saturday instead of Monday.
I kid you not.
Worse timing ever ? possibly ?
DH needs to be back, in Sydney, Saturday morning early.
Blogopolis day ...

It's a big name brand and we are only a SMALL cog in their 'production' wheel ; important, none the less.
NO 'room' to move or option to say NO.
There could be other repercussions if we tried.

I plan on staying I will not miss Blogger's Brunch and Blogopolis.

I could tow the caravan but I have yet to learn how to reverse it or back it into position.
Strike that idea. It is a damn long way too.
Plus , DH was going to have our boys on Saturday.

Can I fly home by myself and find some where to sleep

find my way around ? ... of course I can.

The answer is easy but inconvenient and stressful.
I don't like the unexpected , changes stress me out and I've never been alone traveling before interstate.

My DH is stressed about my stress and his own fragile stress levels.

It's time I tried something new since I do plan to have a good time - it's not all bad news.
I just need someone to hold my hand...
I need advice on flights that allow checked luggage (twitter has been helpful)
Onwards.

How to help when a Baby dies ?

Firstly, I personally don’t know anyone who is entirely comfortable talking to the bereaved after the death of a loved one.Let alone, when it is a family or friend's precious baby who has passed away before birth , during birth or soon after.

I know ... losing a baby at any time is one of the most devastating experiences that any family can experience. Whether 12 weeks , 26weeks or a full-term baby, it's beyond tragic .

I know we had already prepared a lifelong place for ~Charlotte~  in our family before we met her. All parents have hopes and dreams for their baby and beyond.

There are no easy answers when a baby dies and your whole world is shattered.

As family or a caring friend, you might ask

"What do I say?"
"What can I do?"

The grief journey is very painful one for a baby’s parents. Nothing prepares parents for the separation from their baby.

I know we travel to a place not on any map and we don't know when we will arrive or leave. It's a place we have never been to (hopefully) and everyone has a different experience.

Bereaved parents will need the support of their loved ones now more than ever before but seldom will they ask... for anything

So how can you help? here are a few things you might to consider from my personal experience.
  1. Use the Baby's name if named ...do not keep saying " The Baby   ". You can help bereaved parents by listening to them to talk about their loss, if they want and you feel able to listen. Ask them gently if they want to talk about {insert Baby's name}.Don’t try to protect them from their grief – help them face it and if you need to cry, do it. If they cry, silence is ok while they cry ; put a hand on them gently, hug them (if appropriate), pass the tissues, or if you feel too uncomfortable say "I'll put the kettle on to let you have a few minutes (?)." Respect their rights to express whatever they feel or think - regardless of how strange it may seem to you if they seem angry or calm or whatever.
  2. Bring them a meal *or simple groceries to cook (they may be too distracted to cook ).Offer to help with their house cleaning or offer to mind or occupy their other children , it will be appreciated even if they say   "NO thank you  ". Even offering to read their surviving child a story or play with them in their own home while they rest or take care of the cleaning *.
  3.  Phone, visit or send a card : if you don't know what to say a simple message, We love you and we are thinking of  you and baby {insert name if known} today. Especially remember the DUE DATE if the baby died in utero or was born alive early (before the due date). Even an email is some comfort especially if you don't know them too well, for example online or a co worker and don't have a physical address. (There is always Google to help with kindly worded sentiments)
  4. A gift is not necessary; some like to give flowers or a plant: nurturing a living thing can be very comforting for grieving. We were given roses for a memorial garden. A trinket , figurine, ornament or piece of jewelry etc may be chosen by family or a close friend especially, if it is something they know symbolises the baby ~ a Butterfly , an Angel or anything really.
  5. A sense of normalcy is very therapeutic for healing. It's okay to laugh and tell talk about other things, even your own children and theirs. We know life goes on, it just that ours has changed forever.
  6. If someone you know has experienced pregnancy or infant loss and is past the intense grief stage of their own loss, ask them if you can give their phone number or email to the newly bereaved parents. A note in a card is okay. Talking to someone who has been through a similar loss , not necessarily a professional counsellor ,can help to take the isolation out of grief and spare a spouse for a while. (Hospitals usually give plenty of bereavement literature to parents or there is so much available online now)
What not to say ?
  1. When a baby is lost families [and others] often have a desperate need to know why their baby died but now is not the time to ask...what happened .They probably won't know themselves. You can ask What did {baby's name} weigh and how long was {baby's name}?" etc
  2. Don't encourage them to be strong ...or say how well they are coping or ... "Don't be sad. Don't cry  " -    "It will be ok   " -   " It's for the best  "  (e.g.when you know it is genetic)
  3.  Appreciate that they miss this baby, who can never be replaced by another child. If a twin is lost never say 'At least you still have one baby'.
  4. Understand they may not want to know who is newly pregnant or newly delivered in your social circle. It's difficult if you were part of an anti-natal parents group ...be sensitive when sharing such news in the early days.
  5. Don't compare their loss to losing your pet or say this happened to someone you know and it was caused by ..... because they did .....
  6. Remember, too that most people don't say too many insensitive or wrong things [common sense aside]. Above all you are caring enough to talk to them ! Ignoring their loss is far more insensitive.Your friend or loved one is very lucky to have you in their life.
This week I have read several stories about infant and pregnancy loss. It always breaks my heart. I am writing this in response, to maybe help someone help.I hope it makes sense.

I really don't mind being reminded at how fragile life is .Today my heart goes out to anyone reading this who has said goodbye to their precious baby, all too soon .

Kristie said a final goodbye to Avery yesterday ... her son, Avery a beautiful boy born sleeping a week ago.

[mosaic1209926(2).jpg]

"Dear Avery, please see this light as a symbol of the
never-ending love for you. Please understand that this love knows no limits or bounds; it conquers even the hold of death. Let this light shine in memory of the love for you, in celebration of the life you shared together, however brief, and in the hope that tomorrow will be a brighter day.
May they feel your spirit with them even now, gently guiding and strengthening them. With this light they will remember your true gifts : memories of joys past, hope for present peace and love to last a lifetime. May they forever feel your presence and love you always."

Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it ,casts the shadow of burden behind us.

It's my sincere wish that those touched by the loss of a baby are well supported, able to process their loss and hopeful for the future...(not my words but heartfelt wish)

There is so much more I could write including about 'including siblings'...another day .
Edited to add a link to Martine @ The Modern Parent's posts on Grief : Helping Children Grieve

Please note *Gifts of meals ~ can in itself be overwhelming if they get too many meals all at once and no way to store them all... check if anyone can be responsible to organize a list of friends to alternate duties such as meals and visits to help.

(In our church they did this for one family via an organised roster initially while the baby was having surgery for her heart and then after she passed away)
Please share your own experiences and any other advice that helped you or your family or friends.

Linking up with Shae about Things I know ...but sincerely wish I didn't today.

Edited to add this further to precious Avery's story and HeartFelt

The Perfect Gift

Australian Red Cross Blood Service has launched a new and innovative Christmas campaign with the tagline “The Perfect Gift”. The focus of this campaign is to get people to consider giving something that will really make a difference this Christmas by donating blood and giving the gift of life.

There is a dedicated page where users can watch and share “The Perfect Gift” TVC. They can also print out and personalise a specially made “The Perfect Gift” gift box which they can put together and give to friends, family and colleagues bringing this digital campaign into the real world.

My dear Dad (~2005) during his treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia received countless life saving blood donations. I am forever grateful to those people who gave him this gift that allowed us to have him in our lives longer.

Ivy also needs your gift ...

This beautiful ballerina "Ivy"(5yrs) is one of many special people who have received the gift of life thanks to people who donate blood. Ivy receives a transfusion of IVIG every 3 weeks.
THERE'S NO BETTER GIFT THIS CHRISTMAS THAN GIVING LIFE.

Stuck for the perfect Christmas gift? Why not give something that will really make a difference. This year, give something life-saving and donate blood. Every donation saves three lives. To find out how to give the perfect gift, visit http://www.donateblood.com.au/blood-service-campaign/the-perfect-gift?sourceId=PGBL

  1. Make an appointment to donate blood 13 14 95 or online
  2. Print the PDF gift box on the ARCBS website (see above).
  3. Write a personal note inside , talk to your family & friends about donating blood.

The hard facts: (AUSTRALIA)

  • Every donation can save three lives.
  • Every donation is valuable because 1 in 3 Australians will need blood, yet only 1 in 30 donates.
  • The need for blood is constant and all blood components have a limited shelf life, which is why donations are needed every day. Blood and blood treatments are delivered to hospitals around Australia 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – even on Christmas Day.
  • Australia needs over 26,000 blood donations every week to save lives and to meet the need of patients.
  • Donations made in December could help patients recover to be home for Christmas or the New Year.

Editted to add ...Please keep Ivy in your thoughts & prayers today as she is having surgery.

Many helping hands

My dear friend Tiff @Three ring circus has set a goal to raise money for John Hunter Hospital Children's ward. In particular the Medical ward where her daughter, Ivy has spent a large part of her 4 yrs. Tiff wants to buy the 'parents' sofa beds and the nurses a new fridge.

Team Ivy

Ivy's condition is especially tough on her parents who are 'required' to stay for extended periods at the Hospital. Of course any parent would stay willingly even if it means sleeping on the floor but if we help Tiff & Team Ivy reach their goal ...they won't have too.

I was a registered nurse who worked over 12yrs in another Children's ward of a local hospital . Not many of our inpatients had extended stays. Many parents still opted to stay even if it was for one night.
It made my job easier not having to worry about comforting distressed , unwell crying toddlers & babies . Instead being able to concentrate on their medical/nursing needs.

The support parents and other carers provide to their children while in hospital is crucial to their emotional and physical wellbeing. It helps with gaining children's co-operation and a quicker recovery.

We only had a few basic, saggy, fold-up beds or the floor or if they were lucky two lounge chairs.I would struggle sometimes to first find & drag together some chairs to make them as comfortable as possible. Most nurses do what we can ...with what we have.

By providing parents/carers with a comfortable sofa bed it ensures that they can stay with and comfort their child during what can be a very stressful time for a family.

I had reason to stay with my son, Joel, overnight 3 weeks ago in Westmead Children's hospital. It wasn't practical to have a sofa bed in the Accident & Emergency dept so I had a chair & a blanket from midnight till 4.30am (while we waited for a bed on the ward) - it does not give restful sleep (not that I am complaining-just saying).

In the ward was provided a pull out lounge, sofa, bed and I got a few precious hours sleep. I needed it. I was very grateful. I can't imagine having to stay for an extended period without getting a decent sleep ...but parents do.

So I am asking you to go first to read Tiff & Ivy's story or just go direct to the everyday hero link here.

Your donation $ will go straight to JHH , even $5, $10 or ? counts or you can dig deeper . At the moment it is being matched dollar for dollar by Ivy's Dad's employer, Canon .
The support in just over 24hrs has been amazing ~ the goal is $5000.

Kindness of strangers

The vet , after running various tests on Matilda, decided she must have been bitten by a brown snake.By then it was too late ...she was dead. It had been a sudden onset. It never crossed my mind since she has been inside 95% of the day since the kittens were born.
I was devastated.

Late Tuesday night after DH got home from the vet with cat milk powder replacement (and $271 + bill)

I searched the net for information.I started syringe feeding the seven tiny kittens cat milk formula. It took 1.5 hrs including toileting them. Mother cats are so clever...

I went to bed about 2-30am.Not long after S was awake and crying and I crawled into bed with him.

At 6am I started feeding the kittens again.At 9am I trawled the
Internet more and started ringing to get advice how to best care for them.I wasn't prepared to have them euthanized without trying to save them.

I was most disappointed in a few so called cat rescue agencies. I left 3 messages at one and emailed too but they didn't even have the courtesy to return a call.

I found a cat forum and posted a message. Immediately I got a reply. I posted my location
and got a personal message from a lady, H who lived close by.She offered the loan of a tiny teat for a syringe , bottles and advice,She gave me her address and off I went. She was lovely. She sent emails to others in her organisation DCH.
The teat for the syringe worked. I feed the kittens twice more. Then H sent me another message and the phone number of B who might have a lactating cat to foster the kittens.H's purebred cat has 5 day old kittens and she even offered to foster 1-2 kittens if they were 'fading' in a few days.

Another lady called me back in between but couldn't help her cat was too old but she gave helpful advice.
I rang and left a message for B who called me back at 7pm. She said we could met at 9am Thursday or maybe in an hour.We arranged to meet at 8pm that same night (luckily) she lived 30
mins away.

Sadly, I knew it was going to be the best chance the kittens had.As much as I didn't want to let them go I had to.
I got a little lost, we had no street directory at home and the directions from the
Internet weren't good.It was on dusk, almost dark but I asked strangers walking on the street for directions. Then I spotted B or she me. The mother cat was in a neighbour's shed.

Pickles, immediately took to the kittens and Onions was another mother cat there too who started to groom them , plus there were 3 @ 6 wk old kittens. They were orphaned at 3
wks when their mother was hit by a car.Pickles and Onions litters had died. They started to groom and soothe them, plus they tried latching on.B wasn't sure if Pickles still had milk because the older kittens were on solids.

We waited and it seemed the kittens were latched on.It appeared quiet as we waited outside.I felt so overwhelmed I wanted it to be okay and yet I wasn't sure. I went home with a heavy heart.B said it would be okay and she would ring in morning.I was worried because she was next door. She rang again at 9.30pm to say she had checked all was quiet from outside except for an
occasional soft meow. That was very kind of her ...it eased my mind a little.B didn't have time to keep them if Pickles or Onions didn't accept them.

At 3am after a restless sleep I woke with a bad headache, vomiting and my heart racing.
I don't know if it was a virus or the events of the last few days.My body had crashed and I worried if I had something worse...perpetual worrier I am. I went to back to sleep eventually after a few
disprin and good chuck.

I woke with S & J climbing into bed about 6am, still feeling very sick. I let them nurse briefly and they finally went back to sleep till later. I was so glad.
I went to Dr's at 9.15am got an injection to stop the vomiting & nausea.
I came home and slept for a few hours. It was just what I needed. My husband looked after S & J, then his sister came after lunch (they were asleep by then) so he could go to work (self employed) to attend to some necessary things.

B called at 5pm to say the kittens were latched onto Pickles and she couldn't get them off -so that was a good sign. She had checked them 3 times that day. She is going to weigh them to make sure they are gaining weight.
She said I can come see them anytime.

I plan on keeping two of the kittens. They will re home the others.
Two kittens will keep each other company and they are so sure to be entertaining.I will happily pay the fee for
desexing/worming/microchipping/vet check /vaccination etc

There was no way I could have cared for them this morning. As sad as I feel it is the next best thing for another cat to mother them.

Another lovely lady rang tonight too to say she has a lactating cat almost finished weaning so we have another backup.

My little boy, S was so gentle with the kittens on Wednesday while watching me feed them stroking them and saying in his tiny toddler voice "
alwight" over and over ... melted my heart. They needed a lot of loving more than I could give.

Dh kept S & J out of the room while I was sleeping and around midday they got away from DH and were excited to see me (LOL after only a few hours) and cuddled up to me. More heart melting stuff ...awww.J clearly says I love you now too and squeezes his chubby arms tightly around my neck.

Tonight I feel a bit better after sleeping most of the day.
There is a lot of good and kind people in the world and it re affirms my faith in human nature.

Advice of the day
  1. You have to be a contributor if you want to be a receiver. Support animal rescue organisations in your area any way you can ~ donate time, pet food, towels , blankets or money or buy their calendars or items from their online shops.
  2. Adopt a new pet via animal rescue.Read the Rehomed animal Happy endings HERE
  3. A person is not finished when defeated, they are finished when they quit.

Spoilt and assvice.

no it's not a typo !!

I found this advice in an old magazine. The article was titled
Q :what's the best advice you've ever received

one answer was ...
"A day without spoiling yourself is a day spoiled"

So ...

Today, I got three hours to myself when my dear Mum came to babysit the double trouble Brothers ...It's true. Well she did and they have been double trouble (but heaps of fun... when I finish pulling my grey hairs out I will blog about them more)

I saw a blog named the Double trouble twins ... 'be careful what you wish for' I want to tell her ...assvice ?
Maybe she already knows more than I do. They are the cutest little fellows .

The Brothers have been very full on the last few weeks... I read all the twins books I could lay my hands on but they haven't read them yet either and they won't sit still long enough for me to read the books to them!

Sorry ... how was I spoilt ?

I got a superb head massage, my hair washed, cut and blow dried plus it came with a surprise ...a delicious complimentary chocolate and cappuccino. No photos .. (sorry no one to take photos because Mum had had enough to rush away ...and I forgot to take my camera)

I got a wax and polish as well ... I don't have to worry about Movember now or scaring any kiddies tonight with my bushy eyebrows . Plus, no more stuffing falling out from under my arms.

Shhh - I also snuck into Target quickly and bought two new summer tops for the priceless sum of $7.39 each...less than half original price $19.99.

Assvice ? so do you get it ?
I am considering doing NaBloPoMo with a theme. ADVICE and ASSVICE . I'll have to see how I go ...please go dig out your best advice and worse assvice. I be asking for your input.

"If you start the day with a negative thought immediately replace it with two positive ones"

Ps - the park is a great place to burn excess energy.

Pps - when I upload to flickr to make a mosiac it makes my pictures all grainy . Any advice ?

Ppps - when you plan to enter a competition - don't put it off

Jen @Semantically driven has been running a competition - you had better be quick -

What you need to do to win it:

  • Write about why you would like to win it on your blog. It doesn’t have to be a long entry. Make it funny, add pictures. Do what you like, so long as it conveys why you want this phone.
  • Link to my blog - http://semanticallydriven.com within your entry.
  • Leave a comment on this post so I know that you’ve entered.
  • Do this by the witching hour on Friday 31 October (midnight on 31 October in case I’m muddled about what the witching hour is).
  • why do I want to win ...
  • because the Brothers keep stealing my phone and I love the camera feature ... plus I would be really spoilt would not I ? My current phone doesn't have a key lock either. Nuff said !
Ppps I know nothing about any calls to triple 0.

Magic 08 ball

My teen man wants to have a XV* birthday party - sleepover with six friends (yes only boys).

So I asked my teen's Magic 08 ball

Would six extra teenage boys eat me out of house and home be too many and am I asking for trouble ?

the answer ...without a doubt

so I checked again because I had a doubt

yes definitely ...

Seriously , I am still undecided ...he is a good kid and a few of the guys we have met before. He went to a birthday sleepover last Friday night.

It seems the two of us have a love-hate relationship these days. He grumbles and growls at everything but he quite helpful when I nag and threaten to withdraw all privileges he eventually gets the message.I yell back a lot more than I ashamed to admit and I get very frustrated with his mess, eating my treats and his attitude. I know I am not alone ...teenagers think they rule and have all the answers. He pushes all my buttons.

It will probably be the last sleepover party .The little brothers are having a party in 3 weeks so I don't know we can't say no ... and still make it seem equal in his eyes.He struggles because they get lots of attention.

As well since our teenage son has reached the size of an adult, things have gotten more complicated.I can't use stand over tactics We can’t get away with a lot of the things like kids’ meals when we eat out , or shopping in the boys’ section if he even liked what we picked - though he steals his fathers clothes, socks and underwear.

We are limited to how we can contain entertain them ...and not upset the neighbours.

I thought about just giving him money but he is smart enough to know his friends give money ...

I still have a few days to decide and work out how much mileage I can get out of saying yes versus the horrendous consequences of saying no .

Eating Safe

I found about this website today Eating Safe (via Simple savings).

It is a new website called Eating Safe designed to reduce stress, save time and money. I know a lot of friends allergic to egg, milk and peanuts. They seem to spend a lot of time looking at the back of products for the list of ingredients and more time shopping (yes that's bad - dangerous for your sanity [especially with kids in tow] and the hip pocket or purse!

Eating Safe allows you to search their website lists by allergen and food type - and you can specify this down to quite a specific and detailed level.I have only scratched the surface of what it can do.

It analyses your inputs and you get a summary of products available, the pack size, whether they are red (presence indicated), amber (presence possible)or green (presence not indicated) for the allergen(s).

Then you can check individual labels and if necessary ask for more clarification through a forum.Eating safe site staff can contact the manufacturers for their advice.

Flickr-Maiylah

It's also very useful for searching additives and nutrients. Search up to four allergens / additives / nutrients at a time , select suitable products and add them to your custom shopping list (as a member).

It is free to join and as a member you will be notified of any product updates that are relevant to your health concern. The database is growing currently it has 13,829 food labels listed.

It will make everyone in the family and especially kids happier munchers!

A New BEST day ever -update

A NEW DAY HAS BEGUN - target reached !

I am asking all my readers to join the blogosphere in helping Allison - by a simple click or more if you have access to other computers (say in an office)

Melissa from Stirrup Queens and Sperm Palace Jesters wrote ... A New Day

The day that Allison lost Zoë is forever marked her "best day ever" on Wordpress because it is the day that the most people visited her blog. For her own emotional well-being, she needs this post to be taken off her blog dashboard. The way to do that is to create a new record for visits to her blog.

On Thursday, May 29, please click on Allison's blog, Our Own Creation, and help replace that post with whatever is currently up on her blog that day. Everyone needs to visit on the same day--May 29th--because if we simply click throughout the week, it won't bump the day she lost Zoë from that section of the dashboard. I am writing this now to give us time to spread the word. Take the graphic I created and place it on your own blog. Don't worry--I'll remind you to click that day.

We need 2,350 people to visit Our Own Creation on May 29th. We need 1,785 people visit Sweet Zoë.
I have to check the time zone for Australia but sometime over 3-4 pm Thursday should do it.

If you are visiting from NaComLeavMo please read my welcome post HERE.
