Zen Giveaway ~ Cadbury Marvellous Creations Banana Candy, Peanut Drops and Choc Biscuit

What can I say ?  just when I thought they couldn't create a more interesting and unexpected flavour combination. Cadbury surprised me . A few weeks ago I was sent the new Cadbury Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations Banana Candy, Peanut Drops and Choc Biscuit to sample !

First - my Zen Chocolate Thoughts

  1. “There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate.”
    Linda Grayson
  2. “Without pain, how could we know joy?' This is an old argument in the field of thinking about suffering and its stupidity and lack of sophistication could be plumbed for centuries but suffice it to say that the existence of broccoli does not, in any way, affect the taste of chocolate.” {I still love broccoli}
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars
  3. “Strength is the capacity to break a Hershey bar into four pieces with your bare hands - and then eat just one of the pieces.” {Tried - too weak}
Judith Viorst, Love & Guilt & The Meaning Of Life, Etc
  4. “Can I come back and see you sometime?"
"Long as you bring me some chocolate," Gramma said, and smiled. "I'm partial to chocolate."
    "Gramma, you're diabetic."
"I'm old, girl. Gonna die of something. Might as well be chocolate.”
Rachel Caine, The Dead Girls' Dance
  5. “May your life be filled, as mine has been, with love and laughter; and remember, when things are rough all you need is ... Chocolate.”
    Geraldine Solon, Chocolicious

Once we broke open the block , we devoured it ...[seriously a resealable package ]- within , thickly wrapped in smooth and creamy Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate, were velvety - melt in your mouth peanut drops- to get tastebuds tingling, as delightfully as the retro and oh-so-scrumptious banana candy pieces , colliding with a hearty crunch of choc biscuit.

We shared it with family and friends. Some liked it and some commented on the strong banana flavour. It is apparently peanut butter in the drops and the biscuit crunch though not new is still delicious too.

I wasn't so much a fan of Peanut, Toffee Crisp and Biscuit variation myself , none the less  I enjoyed the Banana Candy, Peanut Drops and Choc Biscuit but not as much with the Jelly Popping Candy Beanies !!!

I love all types of Cadbury chocolate. My favourite is still the recently added variation Marvellous Creations Clinkers, Raspberry Chips & Marshmallows. I was sent a bag of actual raspberry chips in June and they are like jaw breaking toffee mmm so good.

For more information head to www.joyville.com.au

Cinnamon Roll Pancakes

I made a tweaked wheat free (buckwheat flour) version of this moreish Cinnamon Roll Pancakes recipe today. They are delicious, just don't do what I did and taste with haste (in other words shove it in your gob too quick) because you'll burn the roof of your mouth.

I used my own pancake recipe but followed the tips found on Pinterest.
I had my idea for it but checked google for 'how to make' and Pinterest showed me dozens of recipes.

Unfortunately, I did not have cream cheese drizzle but I will next time.
Plus, I will stack them 3 high...two is not enough.

I am also going to try her other suggestions and a few of my own.

TIP - Recipe Girl's tips are valuable to success.

PS did you know you can now pin directly from the image, come back tomorrow and I show you mine.

Edited - to change image.
Be careful when you are pinning because there are a lot of spam links with popular recipes like this, and images that don't lead direct to the website.

Get Cracking Wonderful Pistachios - {Giveaway} Gangnam style

 {Review & Giveaway}

When I was sent the three new Wonderful Pistachio flavours: Roasted & Salted, Salt & Pepper and Sweet Chilli to review I went nuts .

No seriously, they are delicious. I shared my nuts with a few friends and family. Everyone agreed Wonderful Pistachios are a winner for a healthy, tasty snack that appeals to the whole family...well not so much the kids but more for me and hubby.

I'm trying to choose wisely when I snack . Pistachios , are a healthy alternative to chips, dips and crackers . They are a rich source of energy packed with nutrients, minerals (copper and iron), antioxidants, and vitamins (a rich source of Vitamin E, B-complex)

I loved the mildly spiced 'turn up the heat' sweet chilli -a little added sweetness and tangy heat of chili.

The salt n pepper was very unique -bold and crunchy.Hubby likes his nuts roasted.

Pistachios are perfect for a pre-dinner appetizer , 'waiting for school bus' afternoon munchies and for family movie night . Pistachios go great with popcorn, on a fruit & cheese platter and the shell keeps little (or big) hands from gobbling them down by the fistful (my boys do know how to chew nuts properly).

Wonderful Pistachios are grown in California and dry roasted - $7.49 for 250 grams at supermarkets.

I came across this Psy video when I was researching my review - hilarious and so catchy

Frenchmen like it hot ~ what could you do with 25mins ?

A few weeks ago I flew to Sydney for a little demonstration ...

credit
Alas , there was no wine nor French man ...

I was already the proud owner of this awesome appliance and seriously The Soup & Co. is the best kitchen appliance I've ever owned*.
It makes soups, smoothies, milkshakes, hot chocolate,  and plus a variety of other recipes including sauces, is also blends and crushes ice {sshh slushy cocktails I've told}.

A soup maker and a blender in one HAWT machine !

  • 2.8L SS Jug, 1.8L useful capacity
  • 2 cooking programs: Fine & Thick soup
  • Automatic cleaning program
  • Ice-crushing function

Imagine - hot soup in 25 mins , from go to whoa ! {Not including ingredients prep}. I love my winter soups , this all in one unit does it all. Simply add your favourite ingredients and select your setting. That's it!
Leave it -

What could you do with 25mins ?

I've made Cauliflower soup , Chicken and sweet corn soup and Pumpkin/sweet potato soup and a few variations in-between . My favourite was from their recipe book...

Chicken Tom Yam

After peeling and chopping ingredients you toss them in, set the program and leave it - leaving you time to do whatever takes your fancy.

If you get distracted ;) - it even keeps it warm for up to 40 mins.

There is no stirring the pot or bubbling over the stove top, not to mention the wall splattering and 3rd degree burns on your wrist from soup splattering up .

Near the end of the program you add any other ingredients as required , otherwise the program automatically blends your soup smoothly or you can chose thick. Ready to serve and slurp !

I tried the Bolognaise recipe but we didn't like it blended with pasta. I used in cannelloni though and it was fine.

Hot chocolate loved especially by the French , was made popular in 18th Century, when Louis XIV's appreciation of the beverage made it a fashion in the court. It is the most amazing, hot foaming chocolate milkshake - 150g chocolate (or to your taste) and 500mls cold milk ...ready to serve 'hot' in 7mins.

THE next best feature - it self cleans on Program 3 - in 1 min - no pot scrubbing ever , a few drops of dish-washing liquid and tap water . I found you might need to wipe the bottom if any food or bits are caught up near the base blades and on one little angled area.

I am not surprised - Tefal , as a brand owes its origins to a Frenchman, Marc Grégoire, and his wife, Colette M. Grégoire ...she wanted a fry pan that didn't stick
Soup & Co is actually still made in France too !

Watch the French demo here with substitles !

*I don't own a KitchenAid yet

This isn't a sponsored post , no financial payment was received.  I was sent a Tefal soup & co without expectation to write about it but I was so impressed I wanted to. All opinions are my own -

I was going to make you Soup & Co vlog till life turned upside down last week, now I'm just tidying up a few loose ends. I wish I had one to giveaway :(

Monday, 4 June 2012

you are telling me this because ...

  • a] It is a "fast food" innovation that will open up new opportunities and deals for Aussie farmers.
  • b] I need a good frying from the Food police (click away now)...
  • c] For a start  - I am not here to convince you to eat more KFC.
  • d] It's menu plan Monday and I need a night off cooking this long weekend and I want to give you a night off cooking
A few weeks ago six 'mummy' bloggers were invited to KFC store in Sydney Airport precinct . I flew down from Western NSW because I was interested ; not for lure of a free lunch. Though, I didn't refuse it .

I honestly tried, and enjoyed, the fresh salad despite claims no one goes to KFC for the salad - it is certainly a menu choice I personally make.

We had been invited because KFC are completely open about the inner operations of their 'restaurants' , ingredients (excluding the 11 secret herbs and spices ) and to hear the back story, from Nikki Lawson, about KFC Australia switching from the use of palm oil to to Australian grown and locally sourced high oliec canola oil~ Hocan

Many times as we have driven from Central West to Sydney, we have gazed at the awe inspiring fields of golden canola.

Canola - Gold
I think it is certainly a move which will help support Australian farming communities. I've noticed local TV has been playing the ad quite often - I rarely watch TV. Local radio has mentioned it too, as many of the farms are in close proximity to us.

The first trial they did in Tasmania in 2010 showed there was no change the taste of the food. It is a healthier option than palm oil too. KFC have also been reducing the use of sodium (salt) with an aggressive salt reduction program across the menu.

KFC will be the main buyer of high oliec canola , having spent the past two years working with 250 Australian farmers to help build a canola industry – from seed to farm to milling.

So it's a win-win - KFC ensures it retains the iconic KFC taste.

I was also impressed by the high standards of quality control, hygiene, storage of fresh raw chicken and other products. The store manager is very hands on, in checking temperatures several times a day.

As well as sourcing mostly 100% Australian produce , KFC also recycle their frying oil - it gets filtered and recycled to third world countries. I not about to bore you with the details.

The Goodification Project is a journey of continuous improvement. KFC realise for most people their product is a treat and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet (in moderation) and one that includes EXERCISE... of course I walked the 1.5 km to the store instead of catching a Taxi.

Nutritional information is available on all menu boards now too, to help you make informed and better choices.

We eat KFC as our choice of fast food option on route from the farm to Sydney or home again. It's my husband's favourite junk food preference. We know our expectations for choice, quality and ease of parking (with a long trailer or caravan a top priority) plus clean rest rooms -will be met !

Given, it is rarely a dinner at home choice, especially since we moved to the country, I'm looking forward to a night off.

In other news I'm also going back to menu planning...

Tuesday - Homemade Chicken drumsticks with homemade chips or Honey Mustard Chicken - steam vegies (WW website -anyone can use this recipe section but not access to 1500 recipes)

Wednesday - Baked pea, ham & oregano rissotto

Thursday - Meat and Vegie Bolognaise with noodles (sneaky lentils)

Friday -  Trio of soups -  Roasted pumpkin and ginger soup, Tom Yam soup and Chicken and sweet corn soup (We have visitors - I'll share my Tom Yam soup recipe later this week )

Saturday - Homemade wood fired Pizzas

Sunday - Chicken or roasted pumpkin and feta filo parcels or a variation for the small boys ( think healthy chicken sausage rolls with carrot/zucchini/oats)

Monday- Queen of the house' night off in honour of Long weekend ...

Thanks to KFC, I have a $30 KFC voucher to giveaway. Treat your family or a friend to a free dinner and enjoy a night off cooking.

To enter please leave a comment telling me:

Why you deserve a night (or day) off cooking ?

The Hunger Games ~ totally Pinworthy

So it seems totally wrong to post about running and health , after chocolate, but lets run with it anyway.

I find it challenging to run outside, on the road, due to my hearing impairment . I worry about not hearing cars approaching. I mainly stick to the treadmill. I love the treadmill workout programs I found via pinterest.

My right sided peripheral vision is impaired so I have to be careful too - not to run into low tree branches.

As well , the farm has uneven dirt tracks and it's dusty at the moment from a lack of rain .

There is a paved track to the zoo I plan to try in the coming weeks.

Last week I ran 8km in secs under an hr and I'm working up to 9-10km this week. It isn't easy but I know can do it. I've been inspired by Naomi @Seven Cherubs all the way.

The 14km City to Surf ,with Team World Vision, run is August 12th .So far I've raised $275 of my $1000 goal.

This is my training focus this week - mixing up my treadmill workouts so it feels like I am running outside.

What is the quintessential Australian Pie ?

Now that crisp Autumn nights are here there is nothing better than a warming home cooked pie for a flavoursome family dinner or dessert.

credit SFI

I confess I've only had limited success with my pie making ventures. Still, I much prefer my own attempts I worry about the fat content of store purchased ones. Sam loves mini apple pies and has been asking to bake our own.

I cooked a modified verison of the beef pie from Super Food magazine for dinner last night , it tasted great but I didn't get a photo .My round pie dishes are still packed away so I used a rectangular dish. The filo pastry (since I had no puff pastry) was disappointingly broken in the package - on purchase and it cracks up so quickly.

Mine are tasty though a little flaky and unpolished so I'm very keen to follow ...

The Search For Australia's Best Pie!

Super Food Ideas, is on the hunt for Australia's Best Pie. Always on the lookout for Australia's tastiest recipes, this year Super Food Ideas is hoping to track down the "best of the best" when it comes to the quintessential Aussie Pie.

"Australian's love pies. It's as simple as that", says Super Food Ideas Editor, Rebecca Cox. "Whether it's covered in tomato sauce at the footy, a quick midweek meal or a family-sized dinner, a warming home cooked pie tells us who we are and that we're loved".
Chicken & leek Pies - credit SFI

There are so many varieties of the humble pie , whether a recipe passed down through generations or a unusual modern version like Thai Beef pies or Green curry chicken.

I love the variety  ~ pies can be hot or cold, sweet or savoury and especially granny’s famous  apple pie with flaky buttery pastry – served with lashings of cream,  ice-cream or custard.

SFI's competition to find Australia's Best Pie will run over six issues from April through to September 2012, with entries closing May 15, 2012.

The lucky winner of Australia's Best Pie will receive a cash prize of $10,000 thanks to Bertolli.

Readers and followers by commenting on your favourite pie can be in the running to be win a $200 WISH card each week , judged by the editor, Rebecca Cox.

SFI’s - Food Editor, Kim Coverdale has 5 tips for cooking a crispy pie ..

1.    If making your own pastry, be sure to rest it before cooking to prevent it from shrinking during cooking.

2.    Pre-cooking the pastry base (or blind baking as it's called) before adding the filling helps the base stay crisp during cooking.

3.    Make sure the filling is completely cooled before filling the pastry case, otherwise the base of the pie will be soggy.

4.    After placing the pastry on top, make a small slit in the middle of your pie. This lets steam escape and stops the pastry separating at the joins so that the filling doesn't overflow.

5.     Pies are best cooked at a high temperature so that the pastry top crisps. Brushing with a little beaten egg or milk will also make sure that it goes a lovely golden colour.

Junk Food TV

A few weeks ago I was invited to an information session with Cancer Council NSW - for the launch of Fat Free TV Guide

This new website helps you discover the number of junk food ads your kids see when watching their favourite show tracks, rates shows by level of junk-food advertising.

My children have hardly watched TV the last 6 months , and when they do I love that ABC2/4 has a zero junk food rating. Yet ...

Did you know that a child who watches 2 hours of television a day will see about 2200 junk food advertisements in a year ~ Junk Busters

The food industry spends millions of dollars to blitz children with junk food advertising during prime time TV viewing for a good reason ...it translates to pester power in the shopping aisles !

The statistics estimate one in four Australian children are considered overweight, and research indicate a high proportion of these kids will become overweight adults. Obesity is a risk factor for many preventable diseases especially some cancers.

I know it is up to us as parents to take some responsibility for what we allow children to both eat and watch on TV - I do let my children eat some junk food , I am not a perfect parent by any means with a totally junk free diet.

When did you last see an ad for celery ? Carrots ? even Fruit ads are rare ! (I now have that Banana ad running through my head...make those bodies sing)

In my opinion this campaign is a great initiative to guide parents and assist them in making good choices and better informing them - save for us watching every single show with them .

What else can you do - go the website and find the links to demand Fat, free TV.

Pancake Flippin'

Tomorrow is #Shrove Tuesday also more commonly known as PancakeDay the day before Ash Wednesday!
An old photo twin 1 took of his brother in July !
If you are in Sydney tomorrow - Tuesday the 21st of February head on down to Martin Place, Sydney between 7 – 11 a.m to see Award-winning chef Brad Jolly from Alchemy Restaurant, and once personal chef to the Queen Mother. The Royals love Pancakes apparently!

Alex be encouraging spectators to join in and make a Pancake or two in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most Pancakes flipped in one minute.#2

I can't make it :( -  but Australian Eggs is trying to get Pancake day on the Map. I bet it will be flippin' fun - I cannot flip them - I use an egg flipper . I have tried much to the amusement of my children. What a mess !!

I have used many pancake recipes always with three key ingredients – eggs, self-raising flour and milk –plus I use melted butter in the mix . I do use a little sugar for sweet pancakes too. Truly my favourite recipe is here - tomorrow I am swapping milk for buttermilk.

Anyone can create delicious homemade pancakes - pfft why should you pay anyone else outrageous prices to make them.

Pancakes are not just a favourite breakfast in my house - we can eat them at any time of the day, sadly not so much now the drummer boys started school ...they still make a delectable dessert !

I have tried them savory style once upon a time (20 yrs ago-yes I am that old) with friends when to Pancakes at Parramatta or the Rocks. I do eat them with Bacon sometimes, more often with icecream and strawberries, blueberries and caramelised bananas. Sometimes yoghurt or ricotta !

Brad's top tip -  the key to making the perfect Pancake?
First have a really good non stick pan, than once you pour batter into a very hot pan make sure that you wait until you see air bubbles forming - this tells you it's time to flip it.

#2 The current title currently sits at 117 pancakes flipped, achieved by Aldo Zilli (Italy) on the set of Blue Peter, BBC 1, London, UK, on 24 February 2009.

PS : The happiest day of my Western Australian adventure was the day both my twins decided they wanted to try and EAT eggs - now they want them every day.
The Heart Foundation’s latest review of the evidence showed that all Australians can eat up to 6 eggs per week as a part of a healthy balanced diet that is low in saturated fat. That’s an egg a day for six days or three serves of two in a week.
If you want the best tips on how to boil/poach/scramble eggs? (Or any questions around cooking with eggs)
A huge range of great tips and tricks, as well as recipes, can be found at www.eggs.org.au.

#Tradiitonally - it meant you used up the flour, eggs and dairy products in your kitchen before the start of Lent which is a time of abstinence and reflection in the 40 days before Easter.

Going to school Nude ~ { Giveaway }

Do you stress out about what your children are {or not} eating at school ?

Let me get to it quick !

I admit my eldest son's (now 18) school lunch would often return home squashed (and soggy from his spilt drink) at the bottom of his bag, with evidence of other friend's snacks & empty packets in his bag too.

I didn't give him any too many processed packaged treats like BBQ Shapes, chips, mini cookies and the like. Lucky for him , one (or more) of his friends  was always in the running for the most popular Mum of the year was a good sharer .

Mr 18 just wanted the same sandwich, nuffin' different - yes I tried lots of ideas. So I usually gave him what he asked - Vegiemite sandwiches (unless he had already eaten all the bread). He was partial to processed canteen lunches occasionally and I know he raided his Dad's bedside pocket change or conned him more often .

He was in 'paradise' when I did Canteen duty each month. I always went prepared to buy his friends a little $omething too. (I still did school canteen in year Seven [First year highschool in NSW] till I was six months pregnant with twins (MOTY runner-up ?)

I wish he had just thrown it in the bin but he wasn't smart enough so I didn't know ...because I did care. Wasted ! Emotions and food and wrappers (plus lost lunchboxes from him leaving them wherever he felt like)
He didn't starve , he would come home and proceed to eat half a loaf of toasted bread and inhale the leftovers in the fridge.

Twin1 & Twin2 are starting kindergarten in 2 weeks {sob} - I have an arsenal hundreds of new ideas to tempt their fussy bite size appetites thanks to

Larissa has a lunch box love and printable schedule to plan ahead and get organised
Mummy Smiles has this list of edible snacks.
Katrina ~ Organised Housewife has this extensive list of freezable treats ideas {submitted by her readers}

Thankfully my twins love fruit, and some raw vegies, so it is easy to choose seasonal fruits and raw vegies they will eat and I am hoping they don't let them out to play till they eat something.

I am also sending them to school NUDE ! No wrappers unless absolutely necessary.
We have been practicing with the easy flip openings and screw tops , zipping bags - with no trouble at all with this ...

I like the new Nude Mini Lunch mover because it suits my 'kinder' boys' appetites and small school bags better . Take the divider out to fit non sandwich items - rolls, wraps or slices.

I know they will just want to smoosh  food into their gobs quick, then run off to play ; not sit and chew.

Better still it fits inside the cooler bags we already own (you can buy special Nude ones too). I like the idea of everything staying cool and fresh tasting , plus it's rubbish free.

We were also sent a muffin mover to try, I think it is a perfect size for anything really. Sam loves it being pink{clear is available as well}.

I think they are reasonably priced and long lasting ; we've had a bigger lunch mover for a few years.

There is a SMASHING new range to choose from for kids of all ages. Smash & Nude Food Movers also have a new online retailer - www.bonzoo.com.au

Ok, so I can't be bothered might not have time to do these ideas everyday or go all the way. Hopefully I will find my

Lunch Punches
or I could try these ...

How smug creative and clever are they  1. 2. 3. 4. ? These were just the cute & easy ones.

I don't want to start competing for kinder mum of the year !

This I might manage

How far would you go to encourage your children to eat lunch ?

To win 1 x Nude Mini Lunch mover and 1 x Muffin mover - tell me something funny about your school lunches ?
Leave a comment below - easy I will chose 1 winner !

Australian Residents Only
Closes 6th February, 2012

Disclaimer: I was sent 1 x Nude Mini lunch mover and 1 x Muffin mover to review, no financial payment was received. all opinions are my own.
