Screwup Saturday and confessions of a diasterchef

Once upon a time there was a Tuesday meme hosted by Bettina ~ on Screwup Tuesday people would blog how they screwed up that week and we would all have a few laughs.

At our own expense mostly.

Yesterday I made Milo muffins . The week before (see above) were perfect and gobbled down quickly.
I thought they were #failsafe - just chuck in all the ingredients - mix - bake !
Voi·la ~ eat  !

Wrong.

Yesterday I had no excuse , all the boys had gone cattle mustering, so I was left to my own de vices.
I had no one to help crack the shell in the bowl eggs  ...and so I totally forgot - until oh - about 5 secs after putting the muffins in the oven to cook !

I had turned around to clean up and saw the egg right in front of me on the bench.

I quickly grabbed them out of the oven , scooped out as much mixture as possible ,  mixed in the egg...then baked them (in new cases).

{It was lucky as much of batter had made it into the muffins as it is so delicious.}

They survived thankfully - it was the muster morning tea too.

On the top - I added Maltesers to half and m & m's to the other half  . The Maltesers were so crunchy and so moreish. The m & m's melted and the colours bled ... the kids didn't care. Due to the missing  eggscapade I forgot to take a picture so I only have last week's one.

I'm just grateful it all worked out in the end because I would have to eat them all myself otherwise :)

What is your #failsafe muffin recipe ?
When did you last screw up a recipe ?

Chew on this

It's Tuesday again and I have had a few screw ups recently today.

SU1.Last night at 11.05pm my phone alarms ... to remind me I due to supply Morning tea for playgroup (adults)...11 hrs later. I rush about and get the dry ingredients out, measure them ready and drop into bed.

I get up 7am this morning I busy myself cooking Caramel banana muffins ... a recipe I planned to post yesterday when I forgot it was Menu plan Monday.

Firstly ...
*Preheat oven to 180 degrees
*Combine these 7 ingredients ...
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1/2 cup milk (this is the measurement I couldn't remember on Saturday)
  • 1 & 1/2 cups self raising flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup lightly crushed bran flakes (I used Weetbix)
  • 2 eggs
  • 90gm of melted butter ...
(SU. 2 I forgot to add this until I mixed the other six ingredients this morning but I did this last time too)

  1. Spoon mixture evenly into 12 deep , greased muffin pans.
  2. Spoon NESTLE top n fill caramel on muffin mixture and swirl through (or dollop and leave)
  3. Bake for 25 -30 mins ...
  4. Cool in pan before turning out .
this all went well AFTER I added the butter ! ...PASS

SU 3. I made Chocolate dream bars
(Bettina's recipe too) ... this time the baking and cooking were all good - [I only forgot the vanilla essence (oops .. and I just remembered this half way through composing post) . ]
I was in a big inpatient and took the whole thing out before it had cooled . As I attempted to turn it over the whole thing cracked up (while I cursed) and broke into a few large uneven pieces - FAIL.
Ps I still salvaged it , I cut it into smaller and more even pieces spread choc icing and kept for the family. At least it wasn't burnt this time.
The underside
Then it was a packet mix of Betty Crocker brownie mix to the rescue - I then realise why I didn't like it last time ... reduced fat variety and it's too gooey. I was only 15 mins late and lucky morning tea isn't till near the end.

SU 4. The teen didn't do his English homework ... again and the teacher called me at home ... Boy is he going to be unhappy...when the Internet access is denied and he has to write 2 pages in a journal to prove he read the book (The Outsiders ... which is what we will be)

SU5. I turned my back for a few minutes seconds ... and I hear cups clanging and water splashing .The terrible two year olds are trying to break my favourite cups washing up ... suddenly I smell something burning. The chopping board. (hmmm why has the smoke alarm FAILed )!

Yes ...they had turned the stove on ...because they move the chairs around the house to access no go areas.

Thank God , I heard the banging of crockery (and yes I did thank HIM) - the remnants of my Chocolate dream bars were in the Tupperware container on top of the very same chopping board and the plastic was slightly warm but no damage.

I hope I can find some air freshener to get rid of the burnt smell.

In last few days they have also emptied half a bottle of my new pink Dove Body wash onto shower floor.
I bought it to support Breast cancer awareness month. ( I left them sitting in my ensuite shower ,with water off while I grabbed their towels from few metres away) . They sprayed half the new pink deodorant as well which they nicked from inside my vanity another day. At the farm they reached up and got a bottle of Toothpaste gel. Twin 1 emptied half a bottle of Colgate breath strips gel onto Twin2's head (he smelt like mint for a few days).
Standing right beside me this morning ( but while I was tying my hair into a pony tail and both my hands were busy)- T1 took lid off some cream and squirted a large amount out. FAIL !

I could go on but ... it will take me to Christmas ...which is in 64 days, 6 hours ... now who's counting ? (have you started shopping or preparing.. * note to self - I must check the Christmas blog)

Pps they just emptied my handbag , took all the coins and cards from my purse too.Now one is screaming MY money... mine.

I have more screw ups but I really have to go hunt the little villains down for a walk. I am on a 10,000 steps a day challenge ... better find my pedometer lost it down the loo a few times too

Don't forget to go say hi to Bettina for more Screw ups.

Ppps ..edited to correct numerous spelling and grammatical errors and my biggest SU - I forgot to cancel the appointment I had with the ear specialist Friday when we decided to go to the farm Thursday night instead...oops

I am finished ...

The kids are asleep ... well two of them. The Brothers are night owls (like me) and they fight going to sleep. They wake up around midnight ...to nurse and I accept this .I know this time will soon come to end.

For now...The dishes are done (thanks DH) , the laundry is folded and hallelujah the 2007 tax is at the accountants and hopefully almost finished. I can't tell you how huge that is.

... hope I get a huge refund ...unlike poor Jamie.

Today, I finished a few other business work projects too . Though I am 100% SAHM I do tax/book keeping for our own business. Over the weekend I also read/cleared over 150 hotmail emails but now have 200 posts in my Google reader. I have been adding more blogs.

DH, the eldest and the kitten are off doing their own thing. The Kitten loves to sit or stalk me or the cords at the computer and will finally curl up in my lap or under the shelf on desk .

So it's just me... and it's quiet. It's really the best quiet I've had in a long time. Next door the builders of the new two houses have been hammering all day gutters/roof battens and fascia boards. My head is still buzzing from the constant racket.

Mother's day was busy but spent with both our families and mothers. My MIL loved her gift and was very surprised. We had lunch with my SIL and her family - then as we put J in the car to leave my sister inlaw's - he suddenly vomited all over himself and car seat. We bathed him , changed his clothes and hubby wiped the babyseat down. Half way home - he starts vomiting again. We stop the car to check him but continued on -only 20 mins till home.

DH had to strip the whole babyseats down to the mould - both seats. It was all through over the webbing harness too.I had to change the Opthamologist at Children's hospital appointment to next week as the seat covers were still wet this morning. I also didn't want to spread anything J might have had. Both of the boys have colds and runny noses and fevers over the weekend. J stopped vomiting but still has a temperature.

I spoke too soon J is awake again...

S finally got his new glasses today * high five * after the lawn mower episode *boo*- Flexon ones (metal memory to withstand kids - I hope so) . I didn't have to rob the bank but still more than I should have to pay. He isn't leaving my sight now.

Yesterday , I had a few sad moments thinking of my little angel, my friends who have lost babies, and my friend ~Chris~ and her little boy who will never know his Mum. Also, my cousin who passed away 5 years ago - at the same age I am now ... it was probably around Mother's day 2003 she was told she had a few weeks to live - bowel / ovarian cancer leaving behind 6 children aged 4 - 18. Sadly, I didn't know her well once we were adults she lived too far away.

After she died in June 2003 her 5 older children 9-18 went to SA with their Father. The youngest (now 9yrs) has spent the last 5 years shifted from one family to another - including 3 weeks with us in 2003 and foster care.I hope finally she finds love and stability with my sister where she has lived the past 6 months. I still feel some regret she didn't get to stay with us.

For those of you who have no children (yet) or ~angel babies~ not with you or Mothers not here.I hope Mother's day wasn't too awful for you. My heart is heavy right now with the devastation in Burma ... I can't imagine their grief with so many loved ones drowned and suffering.

Screwup Tuesday ...

Bettina started this meme and I am playing today

Screw up 1.

Friday night I ordered 2 Pizzas from HERE - I sent DH, my cousin M and 14yr old to pick them up .They were also going to get a DVD which is in same complex. I say it will be $14.50

They return home with 3 pizzas and I quiz them.
He insists "they said you ordered 3" - I say I didn't .
I open the boxes to dig in quick and only one of the 3 pizzas is what I ordered.

I quiz them more ... Dh said he asked did they have another order for xxxxxx (insert our surname) because he thought I said 2 too. They said no we only have one order for xxxxxx. DH thinks oh well, takes, pays and comes home. The price was almost same $14.90.DH nevers argues on price (even if he remembered I said $14.50 - I would argue over 5c) . He also didn't have his mobile to call and check. Unusual for him not to carry it.

I jump immediately on phone to complain while scoffing down pizza anyway. They aren't sure what happened - I badger them for a credit for next time on my favourite which is missing.

Pizza is all gone 5 mins later ... they start to gnaw read the box lid and talk about the promo . I suddenly notice this ...
uh huh ...

I ask them why they went THERE - instead of HERE

THEY thought I had called THERE (because of the vouchers that DH had brought in with the mail) even though I knew they were going HERE to get a DVD too.

Funny thing is that THERE had pizzas for xxxxxx ready at that exact time and that we beat them to THEIR pizzas .

I bet that the other xxxxxx family were curing THERE's screwup !!! over THEIR pizza's.

In case your wondering I did not ring back HERE - because I was still rolling on the floor laughing my @rse off - we all were was so embarrassed and I am a tightwad - cause they owe me a free pizza ... makes up for the other times when it was cold and crappy.

SCREW UP 2 ...I saved the best for last ... murphy and karma visit ...

DH was outside Saturday and tiding up the Brothers' toys and backyard.

I was inside doing paperwork on my computer. I go outside to check what they are doing ... procrastinating.

DH is mowing the lawn... actually he is kneeling by the grass clippings.

I notice S is sans glasses . I ask where are S's (new 1 week old) glasses.
As I approach DH meets me at the clothes line (not for a kiss)... he opens his wallet and starts laying
in my hot , itcy palms . Then a tatty piece of hat elastic ...

I no comprehendo ...

I look puzzled ...

Then the four hundred dollar bomb penny drops ...

After much WTF "$#@%&^*(#@!%^&*($#@%&)^*(#@!%^&*($#@%&^*(#@!%^&*(*)"

We I kick search the clippings and find the expensive lenses ($120 worth - scratch resistant polycarbonate lenses designed to last to withstand the rough stuff - hello ? does include the lawn mower) but no frame ($159) ...still !

It's now Saturday afternoon -shops are shut - so I create these from the Baby Banz sunglasses by popping out the sunglass lenses and inserting the other lenses. Just to make do till I can rob a bank get back to the shop.

The shop screwed up -the first pair broke after 4 weeks and were slightly small in temple /arms -kept pushing his ears forward , the 2nd pair barely a week old were the replacement but slightly too big in temple so glasses were sitting on his nose and loose - so S kept taking them off. DH didn't see them in the grass ...

So my screwup was blaming DH... and saying a lot of negative things and blowing my 30 day encouragement challenge ...

I am still investigating a new pair -this time I am getting Titanium ones like these Easytwist.

I should have read this information first too.

Totally my screw up ! but shhh don't tell my DH !

Revive our hearts
Day Eight:

"...but who can find a faithful man?" Prov. 20:6b

My husband is without a shadow of a doubt faithful and true to our vows !

Enough said - he is still here after 20 years -18 yrs married.

How am I going with the "30-Day Encouragement Challenge"? In case you've forgotten, here's the challenge:
* You can't say anything negative about your husband ...to your husband...or to anyone else, about your husband.
* Say something that you admire or appreciate about your husband...to your husband...and to someone else, about your husband!

Meh .. a few screwups as I mentioned above but still working on it.
