Sarcoma Update ~ There was a knock at the door - Aye Aye

Youtube and Facebook have been keeping me amused when I wasn't having my leg drained x 3 times x 70+mls each time.

There wasn't a knock at the door ; actually , the phone (twice) rang after a 10 day wait.
First , at 12.09pm I  received a call from local, gangbusting Cancer Care Nurse who said the Radiation Co-ordinator/Planning lady will call me either later today or tomorrow - once she tee'd up a DR to be at the Radiation Planning appointment...

At 12.46pm  Sitting on top of the phone Feeling glad I wasn't forgotten and practicing patience; She CALLED ME ; JOY. She was stellar.

My planning appointment is next Wednesday and I'll start radiotherapy 28th April; 30 treatments over 6-7 weeks.
While I'm still feeling a bit overwhelmed (or I also prefer dazzled as does my dear friend Kelley)  and tested on many levels , I'm beyond relieved we have a plan.

I haven't been running because don't want to stir up my leg - it seems to be settling with tight compression. NO more weekday paddling *sob* with the change from daylight savings

Now, I have to get our tax finished and get everything in order.

"I run because it's so symbolic of life. You have to drive yourself to overcome the obstacles. You might feel that you can't. But then you find your inner strength, and realise you're capable of so much more than you thought." – Arthur Blank

I am so thankful for the local Cancer Nurse who was liaising for me and my 'crackerjack' Breast Cancer Support Nurse still advocating for me. She is a dragon boat paddler too.

I'm immensely thankful for the team who will be doing the planning and for people praying for me and those sending me emails and messages saying they had been following my blog and I have been in their thoughts.

It’s really hard to put into words how grateful I really am.

What are you thankful for today ?

He did what ?

Since our twins were born we have pretty much lived on a combined single income, even though we have our own business we couldn't justify it.

Over the past few months, I noticed that there are many blogs with many saving ideas included in daily tidbits. My new aim is to spend some time each day engaged in some sort of activity intended to cut costs and live more sustainably.

I haven't done a good analysis yet on the latter. Starting next month, and at the end of the month I will start tracking all our spending and efforts. I hope to see the results of that effort and especially see a reduction in our grocery bill...in a few months.

I realise the concept of frugality and greener living is not for everyone because it is time-consuming.I believe it could take as little as 15-20 minutes a day to start seeing some serious benefits from tracking your spending and being more careful . In time they should be big enough benefits that they start making a real impact on your yearly budget.

Some days it is still a struggle because my husband is a spender and prefers to take the easy road rather than extra time to save a $1 or $2.

So what can I possibly do in 15 minutes that could save money? Here are 10 simple tasks anyone can do in 15-20 minutes. The savings add up over time. if you have suggestions of your own ? please add them

1. Buy in bulk , prepare a few meals in advance and keep them in freezer for easy cooking later on those nights you might be temped to buy takeaway. Planning a weekly menu (really only takes 15 minutes ) can cut down on the grocery bill. Cooking in larger batches uses the same energy. Freezing in smaller portions means you only take out what you need.

Plan around the weekly specials .Knowing what you are going to make in advance makes it a lot harder to skip cooking for a night out because you "don't know what to cook". Keep a record of leftovers in the fridge, or freeze as single portion meals - then when you have enough - the family can choose their favourite TV dinner - saves having food that never gets eaten because it was forgotten in the bottom of fridge and goes bad before you use it or good food going to the dogs.

2. Write a grocery list (and stick to it when you shop or shop online if it available in your area) especially from the advertised weekly specials.Stock up on non perishables when they are on special and items like toothpaste/razors etc.

2. Go shopping in the evening (leave the kids at home- no temptation to buy treats to keep them quiet) and often bakery items like bread/rolls and meat are reduced. Buy them in bulk and freeze.

3. Check the air pressure in your car tyres including the spare, and maintain appropriately. This will save you money on fuel, tyre tread and keep you safer.

4. Hang clothes up to dry on the line instead of using the clothes dryer. Use racks to air clothes first then finish in dryer when you have to. I am fortunate we can hang clothes out on the line to dry - except the stupid dogs have taken to tearing them off the line and playing tug of war till they are confetti.

I really got fired up one day when my new favourite shirt was torn - hubby copped it because he hadn't tied the dogs up {or moved the clothes line as I suggested outside the internal yard fence - hello we have 1000 acres}. One day I noticed my favourite Pj's missing. I thought they must have been left in Sydney ... last week while tidying up outside I found the bottoms surreptitiously stuffed in the back of an outside storage cupboard - the top is ??? I let him off the hook this time because they are just Pjs' o_O ...and he has been so stellar in helping do more a fair share of housework during my treatment.

5. Instead of takeaway night make your own meal 'takeaway' at home - especially if your kids like this meal style - your own burgers and pizza are likely to be healthier as well. Get kids to participate in the preparation as fun learning activity. A modest $20- $30 a week saved equals $1000 - $1500 in a year.

6. Check through all the electrical devices you're not using in the house - turn them off at the switch when not in use. Invest in a master switch. Borrow a device to measure how much power they use. Read more about lots of ways to save energy

7.Use 1/2 normal washing powder in lightly soiled washes and wash clothes in cold water. Only run machine will full loads. The sun helps to bleach stains and a bar of soap and elbow grease works wonders too.

8. Governments across Australia offer a range of rebates and other assistance to help you to live greener. You may be eligible for a number of these. See if you qualify or for any  rebates available

9. Plant seeds/seedlings to grow a small vegetable garden - it's fun and healthy activity for the kids too. Even if it just pots of herbs - they can cost $2-3 a bunch, to use once in cooking. Recycle all waste for the compost.

10. Go through your excess stuff , sell off clutter and things you don't need or use anymore on eBay or trading post (It is free to advertise online for items under $500) and try your local area Facebook buy , swap and sell groups. Before we moved I sold 2 racing car beds, kid's play-gym and toys, a parenting book . I made over $300 through a Facebook group and 30 mins cleaning up the items.

On my bookshelf

I have neglected to update my 101 list recently. I’ve started to get back on track with a little spare time on holidays. I love reading and I'm thankful when I find make time to read for pleasure.

So what is on my ‘101 in 1001’ days bookshelf right now ?

I just finished two new books and I love the smell of a new book, don’t you ?

Discovering two new , to me, Australian fiction authors with other novels I can add to my 101 list , is a bonus.

Violent Exposure by Katherine Howell is certainly fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat (or bed) . I literally couldn’t put the book down ; once I got to the last few chapters, so I was still awake at 1am.

Katherine is an ex ambulance paramedic so this is woven through the plot lines of Violent Exposure .

Detective Ella Marconi is on the case of a apparent domestic homicide and a missing husband with an untraceable past. The mystery deepens with several twists , unexpected turns as Detectives Ella and Dennis investigate all avenues and secrets are uncovered.

Violent Exposure is cleverly paced with events occurring over a few days. It is set in Sydney too which piped my interest even more. The plot is intriguing and authentic sounding with interwoven chapters as the story unfolds. I enjoyed the snappy dialogue.

I am not a fan of extremely violent books and this isn’t. I can’t wait to read the first three books featuring Detective Ella Marconi , and I very excited to hear a fifth book is underway.

Though I admit I am still hooked on Patricia Cornwell books which give me nightmares at times and leave me looking over shoulder and jumping at my own shadow.

About the Author
Katherine Howell is a former ambulance officer. Her award-winning novels are published in the UK and Europe in six languages. She lives in Queensland with her partner and is currently working on her fifth novel about Detective Ella Marconi.

This next novel, just finished, is very different . If you need a new book for your book club or one to touch the heart then you will love The Secret Ingredient .

I have always wanted to join a book club but I’ve never done much about it. It is the story of my unfulfilled life - no time or lacking motivation and probably no excuse !

Andie’s marriage is falling apart after deceit and betrayal by Ross, her husband (On his 2nd marriage). Andie gave up her dream to be a Chef for Ross who wouldn’t tolerate her career .The betrayal gives Andie the kick start she needs, as she suddenly realises how unfulfilled her life was /is.

Not without it’s own twists and turns , The Secret ingredient keeps you guessing at the turn of every page. It’s a story about not giving up on your dreams when everything comes unglued.

Andie searches for the Secret ingredient as she embraces her re-established career with a frenzy and finds ...of course I am not going to spoil it.

I loved how Andie wafts away the drama and begins life in new territory with many touching and awkward moments. As she takes control in her new life , predictably, she finds ‘anything’ is possible. Still everyone likes a happy ending.

This novel was a pleasure to read and engaged me right away. There is humour, fun and just enough romance (but not enough to make you gag) with some authentic dysfunctional family dramas thrown in too. It is also set in Sydney.

I took away the message that good relationships shouldn’t be taken for granted. Hence the need to work hard and be creative in all relationships.

About the author:
Dianne Blacklock has been a teacher, trainer, counsellor, check-out chick, and even one of those annoying market researchers you avoid in shopping centres. Nowadays she tries not to annoy anyone by staying home and writing.

I am also very keen to read more of Dianne Blacklock’s novels. This is her eighth novel so she must be doing something right.

I was thankful and very fortunate to review these PAN MACMILLAN AUSTRALIA Books. All opinions are my own.
Like them on Facebook

Today I am thankful for reading, new books and new authors.

So tell me how do you discover new authors ? What do you look for in a book ?

Grateful Saturday - Sam

This Saturday I am grateful again for my children.
The the light of my life & my happy place. I was feeling a lot of intense grief last week with the loss of so many children and mothers & fathers. I hugged them tighter and I read them more stories at night just because. I felt blessed.
I'm grateful for flowers. My Sam is so sweet. He spontaneously gave my Mum a flower today (but weedlike)...She said 'Thank you' and he said 'It's just a small one'. It breaks my heart to know that he faces many challenges in life because NF1 but he is so happy & cheerful at the smallest things. He gives me flowers too.

I am grateful for Sam's awe & wonder at the stars and moon ...most nights he wants to go check if the stars are out. One night he said 'Look, Mummy, look - the stars are multicoloured' as he awwed over them (was on the way home in the car at night). I wished I stopped driving to look.

Last year I wrote about how I was in awe of four and posted my interview with Joel twin#2.
I've finally got around to posting my Super Sam twin#1 because I kept losing his answers Id written down.

Pay it forward

It's kind of fits into the category one of my 101 in 1001 days - Random Acts Of Kindness. Pay it forward is a such gorgeous idea.

“Together we can change the world, one good deed at a time.”
( I would credit the image if I could find it)

I've seen this PIF challenge around the blogosphere on so many blogs and all the while I envied them.
I've been fortunate to join in Kymmie's @A day in the life of us
This is her PIF post.
Kymmie took the PIF 'baton' from Cate who loves to keep busy.

Though I, too, am thinking what the blazes will I make that is good enough to send to others ?
Surprise me - surprise for you !
So, like Kymmie said " If I'm okay with this, you can be too ! "
Don't be intimidated (said Cate). I'm still am !!

How does it work ? :
I promise something handmade to the FIRST 5 people who leave a comment here. To be eligible, you must repost this message, offering something handmade to 5 other people. The rules are that it must be handmade by you, and it must be sent to your 5 giftees sometime in 2011. Ready, set, GO!

  • The commenters who ask to take part must post the same offer on their blogs, and then send something handmade to the five commenters who ask to take part, and so on and so on.

  • I've haven't got a plan as yet but I have got a few lovely ideas in mind and I can borrow ideas I see about the PIF realms. The Tip junkie has 100's of ideas.
I have 344 days to complete my promise.
It won't necessarily make the world a better place but I'll give it all my heart.

What are you waiting for ? Go ! (pretty please)

The only eligibility is that commenters who ask to take part must post the same offer on their blogs, and then send something handmade to the five commenters who ask to take part, and so on and so on. It works on an honour system.

Update ; Ps I'm very worried that I won't get 5 people but if so I'll still make 5 things and donate them.
