In an emergency ...

It's World Breastfeeding week 1st -7th August 2009 and the theme this year is 'helping mothers and babies in emergencies'

The Australian Breastfeeding Association celebrates World Breastfeeding Week from 1-7 August. World Breastfeeding Week is an initiative of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and is celebrated by over 120 countries around the world.
This year's theme is 'helping mothers and babies in emergencies' and is quite relevant to Australia. We are prone to short-term emergencies such as cyclones, bushfires and floods. More importantly, we are strategically placed to help our neighbouring countries in the Pacific region with their disaster response. It is important that donors and non-government agencies (NGOs) understand about the importance of breastfeeding in emergency situations and that the indiscriminate distribution and use of artificial formula in emergencies is dangerous.
