Wordless Wednesday : Mysterious Grass Trees - Twin Sentinels

Taller than the twins

Xanthorrhoea acaulis - A Grass tree  ?
Xanthorrhoea glauca subsp.agustifolia Grass Tree ?
Xanthorrhoea johnsonii -Johnson's Grass Tree ?

These magnificant Grass Trees grow one to two centimetres per year -possibly over 100yrs old. Grass trees have a life span of up to 600 years - finally three years of searching our property we found them after a neighbour told us of their existence.

If you come visit you'll have to find them !

Dad always called these trees Black boys or black butts, he was into growing all different palm trees and plants. I always thought it wasn't the proper name lol.

Well done on finding them! I remember calling these plants "black boys" when we were little - not very PC I guess - I still struggle to call them grass trees, though hubster grew up in Mackay and said he's only ever known them as grass trees, probably because he lived near Grass Tree Beach.

What a find! I remember taking some school children on an excursion to the Royal Botanical Gardens and learning about them for the first time myself.. Do they grow a big shoot out of the top when they flower?

We bought a tiny grass tree when we got married to represent how long we've been together and to pass on to our kids. It's so exciting to watch it grow - super slowly. Each new blade is a thrill! Yours are very big! Love it.
