From Duplo to Lego ?

My boys love Duplo at the moment (and their cousins Lego some of which used to belong to our Mr 17 too).
Our Duplo collection is 95% their older brothers and the said cousin's hand me down Duplo.

What I love most about Lego-Duplo is the creativity, sharing, the role playing, interacting with pieces and each other , bargaining and to less extent fights over individual pieces.

The beauty of basic Duplo & Lego bricks is the opportunity to let their imagination run free.
Even though Duplo has ready made animal.cars.farm pieces too that click onto the bricks.

Half of me wants to let them enjoy Duplo for as long as possible since we have YEARS of Lego ahead of us . The thought of all those small pieces to pick up undoes me though.

There is a huge box of Lego in Santa's sack for them to share.

I remember playing Lego with my older son a lot. Initially, we would build the sets together (he helped find me the blocks we needed next & I built it). Then he would play by himself.

The magic of Lego is later we can add themed sets and it is always an easy gift idea for relatives to buy them. They won't out grow it for years to come.

The boys enjoy it immensely, it is good for their hand /eye coordination and increases their imagination. They also count pieces and colour match too.

A few weeks ago I was lucky to find this play table discarded at a roadside cleanup ;). I wo-man handled it into the back of our 4WD alone, it just fit !

It is slightly faded, the drawer needs fixing but it is still sturdy and fits 2 or more kids + mum easily. Beats me sitting on the floor too.

When did your children move from Duplo to Lego ?

I can't quite remember when my son moved from Duplo to lego. Must have been around 6 or 7 I think, because I was always so paranoid about the children putting little things in their mouths (still am!!)

My girls love playing Duplo, although the 8 year old sometimes sneaks away and plays with her big brother's lego sets on his bedroom.

I was thinking of giving the little girls Possum's "Lego Belville" collection this coming year. She has lots of collections all packed away in her room.

But just last week my 6 year old swallowed a $2 coin, so I am keeping the Duplo out for at least another 3 years!!!! (Yes, thankfully it did come through the other, but Ewww!!)

Love your Duplo to Lego post...we loved Duplo and have moved into Lego...lots of little pieces, but very fun.
when your little ones get into doing Lego, please let me know and I will send you some cool pdfs that I made to go with Lego building, along with some neat links to Lego things. they are building a huge Legoland near our home here in Florida...so there are loads of Lego projects and things going on here.
Well, thanks for sharing your nice post...and thank you for popping by my blog, too. i have signed to follow your blog.
Have a good week,
Colleen:)

Good question... and I'm not sure. My son (3) currenly plays with both so I guess I'm making a slow transition.

Love the pics.

I forgot to say Lego/Duplo is unisex !

@Sunshine crew (great name btw) - thank you I will

@Jayne - that's value a toy that lasts till 14yrs. Great news you got your prize.

@Caz - the table is awesome ...beats paying $100 for one.I am looking forward to Lego too.

@Kelly - our transition is slow too ;)

Princess and he b/f had lots of Duplo fun on their play date yesterday :) I so want Lego, but agree about the picking up!

@Michelle - I have it for Christmas but I'm still undecided because they baulk at picking up 100 Duplo pieces ;)

@Amanda ...I fear the vacuum cleaner will eat and pick up more than they ever will right now.

We skipped Duplo. My girl was obsessed with Fisher Price's Little People when she was younger & that's what we collected. Now she's fond of Lego like your boys. We try to get a box whenever we can (as they don't come cheap).

We love Duplo too. It great for my two kids to play together (they are 4 and almost 2). I too have been wondering when to 'move up', but I'm resisting just now because they're still getting so much satisfaction out of Duplo... Maybe next Christmas :)

I love playing with Legos as a kid, and I'm really looking forward to that with our girls. They have some stacking blocks that we play with...and we all enjoy...but I'm ready to build houses and robots! :)

I loved lego as a child but haven't introduced it to Immy yet. She has some duplo and mega blocks and seems happy with those at the moment so I guess I will wait for a bit - maybe next Christmas???
