If I don't win the UK lottery every 2 days, I know that something is wrong.

I wonder if anyone ever believes it?

OH Veronica , my hopes are dashed !
Sadly - there must be ...else Snoskred wouldn't be warning us. My sister works in fraud for which bank and she has told us a few cheque /credit scam stories.

Yes, people believe it. There are many people out there who have believed all their life that one day they are going to win the lottery. When they get the email, it is something they have been expecting for a long time.

A lot of the victims are elderly people new to the internet, people who don't speak English well, people who have never heard of the scams before.

The lottery scam is one of the more successful ones that the scammers run.

And the victims are hooked into it gradually. They'll be told they need to pay $100 for taxes, or fees. And they'll think - I pay $100 to get my millions. That's ok. So they pay it. Then they are told they need to pay a few hundred for this or that. They've already invested financially and emotionally, and psychologically they have spent that won money already. So they'll pay the few hundred.

Then it might be a few thousand. This is the time that they might start to question what is going on, but often they'll pay that too.

To the scammers a few hundred is enough to live for a year in their country. And in their country this is an accepted way to make a living. The police are corrupt and nobody gets arrested except perhaps the rare show put on for the media.

The scammers adapt what they are doing constantly. Their latest scam involves phishing for email accounts and then locking the owner of the email account out, and then emailing all the friends and family of the owner saying that they travelled to Nigeria (or it might be Canada, or the UK, or even somewhere in the US, if that scammer gang has someone located there) for work and now need money. They just need one to pay something.

So once we educate people about one scam, they start using another one, and then we have to educate everyone about that. It's an impossible job but we keep trying because we don't want anyone to get scammed.

Cheers!

All it takes is for 1 out of 1 million to believe it and they make their money. DANG! Sad but true.

If only, eh?
